In this chapter we find Lehi's sons going back to Jerusalem to get the scriptures. It was essential that they have the scriptures with them as they went on their exodus out of Jerusalem so that they could study them and keep the commandments listed in them. In addition to having the word of God through the scriptures, this also gave them a way to preserve their written language for their posterity.
Nephi showed great faith in God when faced with the problem of how to get the scriptures. His brothers were not as faithful, even though an angel of the Lord appeared to them. They feared man more than God. Probably one of the most quoted verses from this chapter is Nephi's response to his father's request that he and his brothers go back to Jerusalem to get the scriptures:
7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.
This verse is a great reminder to me that God gives us no commandment that we cannot follow. All we need is faith in Him!
